Company or corporate fertility benefits are a type of employee benefit that provides coverage for fertility treatments and services. These benefits can range from partial or full coverage for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or artificial insemination to access to counselling and support services. At Fertifa, we support employees with fertility benefits, across the UK and Europe.
Fertility issues and infertility diagnosis can be hugely stressful and challenging process for couples and individuals going through it. And this is especially so in the absence of proper workplace support. According to a recent study by Brabners, 53% of people with fertility problems say they’d be more likely to stay at their company if the employer funded infertility treatment.
We've seen firsthand how when companies offer fertility support and benefits for their employees, it can create a culture that's open, inclusive, and where people can bring their full selves to work. This can make a huge difference to employee retention, productivity, and your company's ability to the best talent.
Why all companies should offer fertility benefits
38% of people going through fertility treatment consider quitting their jobs. With an average cost of £30k to replace an employee, having the right support for your workforce will have a positive impact on your bottom line. Fertility benefits have also been found to:
Attract and retain the best talent
Implementing fertility benefits can help to attract and retain the best talent. More and more, people are looking to join companies that support them through any of life's biggest challenges, and this very much includes starting a family. We've seen it with flexible working, and how that's become a key requirement when people are job-searching, and gradually the same is becoming true of fertility support and reproductive health benefits as a whole.
Improve company cultures
Fertility support and fertility benefits can have a big impact on company culture and employee morale. Putting a fertility policy in place and offering your employees support is a very clear indication that an employer truly cares about the wellbeing of their employees. It shows that an employer understands that not everyone's path to parenthood will look the same, and it reflects the way life works for so many people.
Reduce healthcare costs
Fertility clinic visits, treatments, and fertility drugs can be very expensive. Company fertility benefits can help to reduce the overall cost of healthcare for the company, and offer financial alternatives for anyone concerned about spending considerable amounts of money on fertility treatments.
To create a workplace that's truly diverse and inclusive for everyone, it's crucial to support people through what can often be a difficult journey that can last many years. You can't say authentically that you care about DE&I as a company without fertility and family forming support in place. Read more about why fertility benefits matter here.

Fertility coverage options for employers
1 in 6 people will experience fertility challenges globally. Fertility and family-forming support for employees is more important than ever as fertility challenges and infertility are having a very real impact on so many of us and our working lives. Fertility treatment coverage offered to employees will depend on the fertility benefits provider an employer works with. This differs from provider to provider and employer to employer, depending on budgets.
At Fertifa, we support people on their path to parenthood from start to finish, helping them navigate fertility challenges of any kind. Here are a few areas we work in that might help you find what's best for your company and budget:
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A less expensive and alternative treatment option for some women, IUI is a common fertility procedure. Providing IUI benefits to employees is a great way for companies to support family forming and reproductive freedom for individuals.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
This is the most common type of fertility benefit with the highest success rate, and it typically covers the cost of IVF procedures, medications, and related tests. Depending on the company policy, this can range in the number of treatment cycles covered and amount covered.
Adoption and Surrogacy Services
For couples and individuals looks to form a family through surrogacy or adoption, companies offering support can help cover the cost of treatments or legal services for their employees. This is a great way to make family-forming policies and benefits inclusive of all regardless of their sexual orientation or marital/relationship status. This includes single parents, LGBTQ+ couples, heterosexual couples and anyone else facing a barrier to family building (such the cost of treatment or expensive procedures).
Fertility Preservation Programmes
Fertility preservation programs can be a valuable sort of option for people who are facing medical conditions or treatments that could affect their fertility. These programmes can help people to preserve their fertility and their chances of having a family in the future. Companies can choose to help support programs that store frozen eggs, sperm, or ovarian tissue for future use.
Egg Freezing Programmes
Egg freezing is a process that allows women to preserve their fertility for future use and companies can offer support to employees seeking this option.
Sperm Donor Services
Finding a sperm donor can be a hard and expensive process. Offering sperm donor support to employees can help reduce the stress and costs of this process for individuals and families.
Artificial Insemination (AI)
AI is used to treat infertility in couples who are unable to conceive naturally. It can also be used by single women or same-sex couples who want to have children. Supporting women with AI can create inclusive workspace communities and can help with the financial and logistical burden that AI can be.
The financial impact of offering fertility benefits to your employees
Increased employee retention rates with comprehensive fertility benefits packages
Providing fertility benefits can show employees that their employer genuinely cares about their wellbeing, in a way that's meaningful. This can have a huge impact on company culture and increase employee loyalty and satisfaction too.
A comprehensive fertility benefit package can also help reduce employee stress levels. The weight of infertility and the stress of going through fertility treatment can be enormous, and financial support and access to medical care can relieve part of that stress. This in itself can lead to increased employee productivity. It doesn't make fertility challenges all of a sudden easy, but but some degree of coverage of fertility issues does help alleviate the overwhelming pressure people are under, and even a small amount of workplace support can make the world of difference to a person's life.
Fertility benefit packages also have been seen to help employers to attract and retain top talent. In today's competitive job market, many employees are looking for employers who offer comprehensive benefits packages, and this very much includes fertility benefits.
Cost savings for employers in the long-term, with better access to fertility care
A Mercer study revealed that 97% of employers who offered an allowance for fertility treatments didn't end up spending more on a net basis because of lower PMI claims and other treatment costs overall. Adding fertility benefits and allowances is a great choice for companies looking to offer support for their employees. No matter the company's size, there are different fertility benefits plans that can work with your budget.
Consider easing employee concerns through comprehensive health insurance packages
Navigating the ever-growing health insurance marketplace for individual insurance plans can be time consuming and expensive. Employer-funded health insurance plans can:
- Remove the hassle and financial burden that comes with purchasing individual plans
- Reduce the risk of employees being left with a lack of insurance coverage.
- Ensure employees and their families are protected against sudden medical issues.
By partnering with a health insurance company, employers can boost employee security and safety. Plans typically include access to healthcare providers, and sometimes additional perks like wellness programmes and preventative care services. However, in almost all corners of health insurance, coverage includes a wide range of invaluable medical services such as consultations, treatments, and surgeries.
